IES Engineers | Project: Fuel Oil Storage Tank Upgrade Project

Fuel Oil Storage Tank Upgrade Project

IES Engineers successfully completed the installation of this new aboveground 20,000-gallon No. 2 fuel oil storage tank (AST) complete with secondary containment and a distribution system to satisfy the needs of the Boiler Plant and Cogeneration Facility at Crozer-Chester Medical Center. IES’ responsibilities included engineering design, equipment procurement, installation, start-up, and both L&I and environmental approvals.

Liquid level sensors, inventory management, and a leak detection system are an integral part of this new AST and its double-walled piping system.

The purpose of this storage tank upgrade project was to bring the tank into compliance with the federal and state UST regulations, which required either its removal, upgrade, or replacement with an AST.

This turnkey project was delivered under a Guaranteed Maximum Price contract using IES’ unique “open book” policy, and it was completed on time and within budget, fully meeting the owner’s expectations.

Following installation of this new storage tank, IES obtained the necessary approvals from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for closing an existing underground fuel oil storage tank in place to minimize traffic interruptions to emergency vehicles and the medical staff. IES closed the UST in place by draining and cleaning the tank and filling it with a light concrete mix.
