RONALD E. PATTERSON
Senior Process Engineer

Mr. Patterson has more than 25 years of industrial process engineering experience, particularly in the petrochemical, specialty chemical, and pharmaceutical industries. He has had lead responsibility for comprehensive technical assessments, process designs, conceptual engineering, design support, and commissioning and start-up of manufacturing, pollution control, and utility systems. At IES, Mr. Patterson is chiefly responsible for providing process design leadership, including: feasibility studies, system conceptual engineering and preliminary design; mechanical layout; development of Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs); equipment specification, procurement and selection; process control and instrumentation; environmental permitting; and plant commissioning and startup. He also manages select projects, provides consultation and quality control review of work performed by staff engineers, and leads IES’ practice in Process Hazards Analysis (PHA). Mr. Patterson supports IES’ Regulatory Compliance staff in developing environmental permitting strategies, evaluating waste minimization, and reviewing Health & Safety and OSHA compliance programs. Recently he completed projects related to development of emission estimates from wastewater treatment operations and batch chemical operations and prepared a Best Available Technology analysis for a construction permit application. Mr. Patterson has provided projects for Coastal, Sun Refining, Mobil, Rohm & Haas Company, PQ Corporation, Hoffman La-Roche, CVC Chemical Company, DuPont Corporation, Arco Chemical, Sartomer Corporation, Polaroid Corporation, Elf Atochem N.A., Merck & Co., GlaxoSmithKline, and Wyeth-Lederle.

Education: B.S., Chemical Engineering, Drexel University, 1983 M.S., Chemical Engineering, Drexel University, in progress Professional Organizations: American Institute of Chemical Engineers KEY PROJECT EXPERIENCE Wastewater Treatment System, Lonza Pharmaceuticals, Conshohocken, PA - Served as lead process engineer in the characterization, conceptual engineering, design, construction, and startup of a comprehensive wastewater treatment plant. Process included Sequencing Biological Reactors, physical chemical treatment, and sludge conditioning and dewatering. Wastewater Treatment System and Air Emissions Control, Lonza Pharmaceuticals, Los Angeles, CA - Served as lead process engineer in the characterization, conceptual engineering, design, construction, and startup of a comprehensive wastewater treatment plant and regenerative thermal oxidizer system. Process included physical chemical treatment, air stripping and batch distillation. Zeolite Production Facilities, PQ Corporation, Thailand and Korea - Performed process engineering for zeolite plants in Thailand and Korea. These processes include digestion, reaction, crystallization, filtration, drying, and size reduction unit operations. Process design responsibilities included raw material receipt and storage through to product storage and packaging (tank, railcar, and POF). Molecular Sieve Production Facility, PQ Corporation, Kansas City, Kansas - Lead Process Engineer for debottlenecking an existing production facility. Principal responsibilities included optimization of batch heat transfer and revamp of the wet fines handling system. Specialty Acrylate Monomer Production Facility, Sartomer Company, West Chester, Pennsylvania - Lead process engineer for the preliminary and final design phases of an 8 million pound per year batch facility designed to produce several specialty acrylate monomers. Organotin Production Facility Design for Elf Atochem N.A. - Performed preliminary engineering design for this facility. This “grass roots” plant involved the semi-continuous batch production of a specialty chemical. The project involved raw material receipt and storage (tank farms) as well as process and product handling design. Bulk Chemical Production Facility, Elf Atochem N.A., Riverview, Michigan - Completed conceptual engineering and cost estimate for debottlenecking an existing bulk chemical (alcohol amine) production facility.
